A very rare hemiobol of Themistokles

IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Themistokles, circa 465-459 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.37 g, 3 h), struck under Archepolis (?). Head of Leukippos to right, wearing crested Attic helmet; to left, A; [to right, P]. Rev. Monogram of ΘE within dotted square border within incuse square. CNG E-Auction 315 (2013) 79 (same dies). Nollé 3b var. and Nollé & Wenninger 5b var. (no letters on obverse). Very rare. Some roughness, otherwise, about very fine.

Magnesia ad Maeandrum was one of the five cities given to Themistokles by the Persian Great King after his ostracism from Athens in the late 470s BC (the others were Myus, Lampsakos, Perkote and Palaiskepsis).
